The Isle of Man women’s representative team got off to the perfect start in the Ynys Mon Inter-Island Football tournament with a deserved 3-2 win over Jersey on Sunday.

Eleanor Gawne - playing in a record ninth Inter-Island or Island Games tournament - gave the Manx side the lead on 18 minutes via the penalty spot before Jersey equalised five minutes later via Jodie Botterill.

The Isle of Man restored their lead two minutes after the restart when Becky Abbott netted on her tournament debut, before Sarah Wignall made in 3-1 on 62 minutes with a wonder strike.

Rosie Cobert pulled a goal back for the Channel Islanders on 70 minutes, but once the final whistle had blown it was the Manx who secured the points and registered their first win over Jersey within this competition.

The women’s team are in action again this evening (Monday) against Gibraltar kicking off at 6pm at Llanerchymedd FC, while the men’s team play their opening match against Hitra at 6.30pm at Llangefni FC.
