Former Liverpool and England footballer Mark Wright was in the island earlier this week to launch another soccer camp.
The ex-Reds and Three Lions defender held a successful training camp last October which led to Manx youngsters Charlie Higgins and Tomas Lowey being invited to go for trials in the UK.
This year’s camps - run by Wright’s Red Sports company - will take place over two weeks in July and August at Corinthians AFC’s Ballafletcher complex. The first week is from July 24-28 before the second takes place the following week from July 29-August 4, between 10am-4pm every day.
The cost of the camp is £150 per child for one week, or £275 for both weeks. On top of an intensive training programme, each participant will receive a medal and signed certificate from Wright, plus a team photo with Wright and other former top footballers, assessment for a possible UK trial as well as a chance to win one of several prizes up for grabs.
While in the island earlier this week, Wright underwent a tour of the island’s primary and high schools giving motivational talks to pupils about the importance of working hard within your chosen career.
Students were also given the opportunity to ask the former international questions about his playing career.
Speaking about the soccer camp, Wright said: ’This is a massive opportunity for youth players to be given first class training from legends who have had successful Premier League careers.
’The course will be intensive and will give specialized training in defending, goalkeeping and attacking play.’
Isle of Man Football Association development officer Lewis Qualtrough is pleased that the camps will return to the island: ’The IoMFA are delighted that Red Sports is delivering this initiative here. The children will be given an unrivalled opportunity to learn from former players and high quality coaches - we very much look forward to welcoming Mark and his team.’
Wright and his business partner, former Liverpool striker Michael Owen, also deliver soccer school programs and coach education programs in China.
