The first major piece of silverware for second division clubs will be up for grabs on Good Friday when Marown and Pulrose United battle it out for glory in the final of the GH Corlett Woods Cup.
The competition’s showpiece takes place at the Bowl, kicking off at 3pm, between two sides still right in the hunt for promotion from JCK Division Two to the Canada Life Premier League.
The teams are separated only by a single point in the league at the moment, with Marown occupying fourth one place ahead of Pully and both with eight games left of the season.
Dave Brew’s Crosby outfit arguably go into the match as marginal favourites, with slightly better form and having completed a league double over the Springfield Road side courtesy of 1-0 and 2-1 victories earlier in the campaign.
That being said, Paul Guiver’s Pulrose revolution is now is full flow and he has the firepower at his disposal to clinch cup glory should Marown endure an off day at the national stadium.
Brew has a couple of injury concerns ahead of the final, but is boosted by the return of Stuart Morris and goalkeeper Sean Jackson, although the latter will face a tough task getting the nod in between the sticks after fellow talented youngster Jack Telford kept an impressive clean sheet against Castletown in the semi-finals.
Ashley Higginbotham has enjoyed a rich vein of form in front of goal since being switched to a more advanced role, while across the team there have been any number of strong, consistent performers in recent weeks and months, so Brew has a bit of a selection dilemma on his hands.
There is no doubting the talent Guiver has to choose from, especially in an attacking sense, and it’s no surprise that Pully have been one of the highest scorers in second division football this season.
Stephen Glover and Barry English immediately struck up an impressive partnership at the start of the season, which was improved even further with the signing of Marc Priestnal from neighbours St Mary’s and he has wasted no time in settling in well for the Reds.
On top of that, the frontline has been further bolstered in recent weeks by the return of Jamie Skillen who, having suffered a serious knee injury in pre-season, played his first full 90 minutes in last Saturday’s semi-final victory against Michael United, even getting his name on the scoresheet in the process.
The only notable absentee for Guiver is Harry Lowther who has been sidelined for much of the season through injury and will miss out on the Woods Cup, but other than that he has a full strength squad to choose from.
Marown have the second meanest defence in Division Two so far this season, while Pulrose are the third highest goalscorers and the sides have a near identical record away from home as well.
Therefore, this all points to Good Friday’s final being a potentially close and intriguing affair at the Bowl, one which really good go either way and possibly go the distance in extra-time and even penalties.
Kickoff is at 3pm.
l Away from the two cup finals, there are five games taking place across the Canada Life Premier League and JCK Division Two on Saturday afternoon at 1pm.
Defending champions St George’s will be expected to leapfrog Rushen United to the top of the Premier League table when they travel to bottom side Ramsey.
The latter’s relegation rivals Braddan also face a tough battle at home to near neighbours DHSOB.
Having played out a rare goalless draw with Ramsey in midweek, FA Cup semi-finalists St John’s will be hoping to return to winning ways when they travel to relegation-threatened Douglas Royal who are desperate for points in their bid for survival.
In JCK Division Two, Castletown will be attempting to get back on track following their Woods Cup exit when they host southern rivals Malew in what promises to be a feisty affair at The Stadium, while the other game sees Gymns head to Garey Mooar to take on eighth-placed Union Mills.
