Rushen United stunned St George’s with a thumping win at Croit Lowey on Saturday afternoon in the Canada Life Premier League.

The Spaniards punished a lacklustre performance by the defending champions as Geordies dropped points for the second successive weekend and suffered their first defeat in more than a year.

A cagey first-half affair burst into life right on the stroke of half-time when Saints goalkeeper Andy Perry’s clearance fell to Josh Kelly who fired the ball into the net from nearly 40 yards out to give the hosts the lead.

It remained that way until midway through the second half when Mike Williams turned his marked and burst into the box before firing in to make it 2-0.

With Geordies pouring forward in search of a way back into the game, Rushen punished them twice late on to make the game safe, first sub Tommy Doherty powering home a head before a corner struck Sean Quaye who diverted the ball into his own net to complete a miserable day at the office for the Grand Slam winners.

That result opened the door for Corinthians to take advantage but the Whites were held to a draw at the Bowl by St Mary’s.

First-half goals from Sean Doyle, Dan Simpson and Ryan Burns appeared to put the league leaders well on course for victory, only for the Saints to hit back in the second half with three unanswered goals of their own to snatch a point.

Peel were the biggest winners of the day as they thumped Douglas Athletic at Springfield Road. Lee Gale grabbed a first-half hat-trick to send the westerners on their way before grabbing another after the brace, while there were also braces for Billy Kennaugh and Sean Kelly plus further strikes from Daniel Bell and Jonny Shields.

Will Penhallurick netted twice for the visitors while Danny Pennington also scored but it wasn’t enough for the Pinks who went down 3-10.

There was a big result at the bottom of the table where Douglas Royal claimed their first win of the season against Braddan.

Gavin Gawne and Jack Camarda got the Whites off the perfect start at Ballafletcher to make it 2-0 inside the opening 11 minutes before the teams traded goals to make it 3-1 at full-time, a result which lifts Royal off the foot of the table.

Laxey made it three wins on the bounce thanks to a 3-0 victory at home to relegation-threatened Colby.

Stan Manning gave the Miners a first-half lead and grabbed his second after the break before Sean Gavin completed the scoring to keep the Glen Road side in the battle for a place in the top four.

In the Friday night fixture, St John’s and DHSOB played out a 1-1 draw under the floodlights at Mullen-e-Cloie.

He was joined on the scoresheet by Silver Boot contender Stephen Glover, Nathan Yates, Dave Priestnal and Marc Priestnal.

That result was repeated at Garey Mooar where second-placed Castletown eased to victory over Union Mills. Alex Crawley and Josh Duncan led the way with hat-tricks apiece while Richard Holmes completed the scoring for the Mets.

RYCOB got back to winning ways in fine style as they thumped Ayre United at Scoill ree Gorree.

Having suffered three successive defeats going into the match, Youthie came flying out of the traps and goals from Lewis Moran (2), Steven Grose, Declan Cummins, Aidan Cummins and an own goal sealed the three points.

Marown recorded an impressive 4-0 victory over Malew at Clagh Vane to move level on points with Youthie, Joey Rothwell grabbing a brace in the first half before strikes from Sean Shimmin and Ashley Higginbotham netted after the break for the Crosby outfit.

The Ashbridge’s took centre stage at Balleira Road when Onchan recorded a comfortable 5-0 victory over Michael United.
