Another raft of players make their seasonal debuts in the latest Isle of Man Newspapers’ Team of the Week.
No fewer than seven players earn their first TotW caps of the 2019-20 Canada Life Premier League season after impressing during last Saturday’s round of fixtures.
No stranger to the hypothetical XI, Andy Perry makes a welcome return to the selection after shining in goal for Ramsey as he pulled off several good saves to dey Corinthians an even bigger margin of victory during the Whites’ 2-0 win at Ballafletcher.
Another player to steal the plaudits in that contest was Ryan Burns who produced a fine performance in the Corinthians defence to help his side keep a first clean sheet of the season.
Burns lines up in a traditional four-man defence alongside St Mary’s player/manager Alex Harrison, Laxey star Max Murley and Marown’s Mr Consistent, Cameron Avery.
Harrison delivered a typically assured display at the heart of the Saints’ defence as they brushed aside Douglas Royal with relative ease at the Bowl, while Avery claimed the man of the match honours for Marown despite the Crosby side being on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline away at Douglas Athletic.
Murley, the reigning Player of the Month, maintained his excellent form with another strong showing for the Miners in their thrilling clash with Rushen United at Glen Road.
The Spaniards edged that encounter by the odd goal in seven and picking up the man of the match plaudits was Ste Riding who ran the show for the visitors and inspired his side to an important victory.
Riding slots into a three-man midfield alongside Corinthians’ Stephen Whitley and reigning Football Writers’ Player of the Year Jack McVey. Whitley starred for the Whites during their aforementioned hard-fought 2-0 victory over Ramsey, while McVey grabbed the headlines with a well-taken hat-trick as his St Mary’s side thrashed Royal 9-1 at the national stadium.
All three attackers in the latest selection make their seasonal debuts in Team of the Week, namely Jack Townsend, Jordan Cooper and Mike Williams.
Townsend starred for DHSOB as the Blackberry Lane side claimed their first win of the season with a 4-2 victory over Pulrose United at Springfield Road, while Cooper continued his fine start to life at Laxey as he netted twice for the Miners who came from behind and very nearly stunned Rushen at Glen Road.
In the end though, the Spaniards dug deep and Williams struck a dramatic 91st-minute winner to ensure that his side returned to Croit Lowey with all three points and capped off a fine individual performance that earned him a place in TotW.
Picking up the Referee of the Week honours is Andy Glover whose meteoric rise through the refereeing ranks continued with an excellent showing during the Laxey v Rushen clash.
