St Mary’s snatched a dramatic last-gasp point in a dramatic clash with rivals St George’s at the Bowl on Saturday afternoon.
Geordies appeared to be on course to claim a vital victory in the Canada Life Premier League at the national stadium until Jack McVey slotted home an injury time penalty to seal a 4-4 draw. Both sides ended the game with 10 men, while Geordies also had two players sent off after the final whistle.
Defending champions St Mary’s grabbed an early lead through a Dan Hattersley header and, while Johnny Myers levelled matters for Geordies with a fine header, the hosts retook the lead on the stroke of halftime thanks to another McVey penalty.
Moments after the break through, Myers slotted home a penalty of his own and then completed a memorable hat-trick with a sublime free-kick right into the top left-hand corner of Sam Holliday’s goal.
Substitute Matty Kent-Lloyd dragged Mary’s back level, only for Geordies to go straight up the other end of the pitch and retake the lead through Chris Bass Jr.
Just when St George’s appeared to be on course for victory - after Adam Adebiyi had been sent off for St Mary’s - the hosts struck back right at the end of the clash.
Sean Quaye was adjudged to have fouled Kent-Lloyd inside the box and a penalty was given, with Quaye being shown a second yellow card. Up stepped McVey to clinch a point for his side with his second penalty of the game.
To make matters worse for Geordies, Furo Davies and Maleigh Freestone were both shown red cards after the final whistle.
Elsewhere in the Canada Life Premier League, there was also a dramatic game out west where Corinthians edged past Peel by two goals to one.
Josh Ridings gave the Whites an early lead before Johnny Kelly was sent off for the home side and Lee Gale was sin binned.
Like Murray added a second for the visitors before halftime and, despite Peel pulling a goal back after the interval through Gale, the Ballafletcher side held on to claim all three points.
Rushen United continued their fine start to the season with a 5-0 victory at home to relegation-threatened Pulrose United.
The Reds made the southerners work hard for victory though - indeed the game was goalless at halftime - but goals from October Player of the Month Alex Maitland, Mike Williams, Alex Guy, Jamie Johnston and Ste Riding sealed a 5-0 win for the Spaniards.
DHSOB took a big step towards pulling away from the bottom of the table as they eased to a 5-1 win away at Douglas Royal.
Tom Chatel scored from the penalty spot for the Whites, but goals from Jack Townsend with a brace plus Robbie Ward, Ryan Gartland and Dean France clinched victory for Old Boys.
Laxey continued their quest to claim a spot in the Railway Cup semi-finals with a high-scoring 8-2 victory at home to Douglas Athletic.
Jordan Cooper led the way with a hat-trick while Aaron Bradley and Michael Fernandes both scored braces for the Miners and were joined on the scoresheet by Luke Strickett-Morling, while Reece Lake and Rio Alison netted for the Pinks.
There was another goal-fest at the top of JCK Division Two as leaders Union Mills came unstuck against a late flurry of goals by Ayre United in Andreas.
Luke Booth netted twice to put the Millers in control but Harry Weatherill pulled a goal back for the Tangerines before a Sean Trayler penalty restored the visitors’ two-goal cushion before halt-time.
George Rawlinson halved the deficit again for Ayre only for Booth to complete his hat-trick to make it 4-2 with 26 minutes remaining.
However, the game was turned on its head in the closing stages when Antony Bayle and Dean Tate levelled matters in quickfire fashion before late goals from Johnny Shields, Shaun Kelly and and Aidan Cummins sealed a dramatic 7-4 win for the Tangerines.
That result means that Onchan have taken over at the top of the second division after they got the better of Malew 4-2 at Clagh Vane, while Braddan remain close behind thanks to an excellent 3-2 victory over Colby courtesy of goals from Mikey Hutton, Nick Harvey and Dan McLaughlin.
Foxdale recorded a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Douglas and District thanks to strikes from Andy Williamson, Stuart Morrisonn, Jay Chatwood, Liam Cannan and Ricky Newsham.
Gymns claimed their first points of the season as they recorded a fine 3-2 win away at Michael United at Balleira Road, while the Friday night game at Mullen-e-Cloie saw St John’s romp to an 8-0 win over Governor’s Athletic.
Harry Rothwell stole the show with a hat-trick and Richard Winn chipped in with a brace, while the other goals came from Ray Lovell, Dean Leece and Jamie Crook.
