Isle of Man walking football teams enjoyed several notable results against international opposition at the recent Triskelion Tournament in Birmingham.

The Manx contingent - sponsored by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company - travelled to the city’s New Irish Centre in King’s Heath for the competition, which brought together teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Caribbean.

Despite temperatures soaring above 30C, the island sides produced a series of impressive performances across the various age categories.

The 40s team recorded a particularly significant result, securing a maiden victory at this level against England Reds.

The Manx side surged into a 3-1 lead before their opponents fought back to reduce the deficit to one goal. But the Isle of Man held firm in the sweltering conditions to secure a memorable 3-2 success.

Brett Kitching was the star of the show with a brace, while Karl Hunter also found the net.

Hunter had already scored in the two earlier matches, finding the target in defeats against Dragons of Wales (3-1) and England Whites (4-1).

The 50s team also pushed their opponents all the way, suffering narrow defeats against both Wales and England. Lawrence Wetherill was on target in the 2-1 loss to the Dragons.

The 60s continued the Isle of Man’s excellent record at international level, drawing 1-1 with both Scotland and Wales.

Player/manager Tony Sewell scored against Scotland, while Steve Hawke added to his impressive international goalscoring tally in the draw with the Welsh.

They also suffered narrow defeats against England and Ireland, while only a strong Caribbean side managed to dominate the battling Manx team as fatigue began to take its toll.

There was further success in the 70s category as the Isle of Man defeated England 75s 1-0.

Rob Earner made amends for an earlier missed penalty by keeping his composure to score the decisive second-half winner, completing another positive tournament for the Manx walking footballers.
