John Surtees CBE, the only man ever to be a world champion on two and four wheels, passed away this afternoon, Friday, at the age of 83.

The six-time TT winner was admitted to St George’s Hospital, London in February with an existing respiratory condition and after a short period in intensive care he passed away peacefully. His wife, Jane and daughters, Leonora and Edwina were by his side.

Surtees, one of the true greats of motorsport, made his TT debut in 1954 and recorded his first win in the 1956 Senior.

He recorded Senior and Junior doubles in 1958 and 1959, rounding off his career on the Mountain Course with victory in the 1960 Senior. All his TT wins were on factory MV Agustas.

Surtees switched to four wheels shortly afterwards, adding the 1964 Formula One title to the seven he won in motorcycling.

He continued to work tirelessly up until recently with The Henry Surtees Foundation and Buckmore Park Kart Circuit.
