The 17th Manx Youth Games was launched this week at an event attended by Lieutenant Governor Sir Richard Gozney.
The event, organised by Manx Sport and Recreation (MSR) was launched by Education Minister Graham Cregeen MHK.
Youngsters will take part in training sessions to prepare for the games on May 12.
Mr Cregeen said: ’The games enable thousands of children to try sports they might not have experienced in a fun and non-competitive environment.
’It’s a fantastic sight to see excited participants parade into the NSC wearing their region’s colours, with their mascots and banners, take part in the warm-up and then disperse for a packed day’s events.
’It’s important we encourage children to enjoy sport from an early age.
’It boosts mental and physical health and leads to lifelong hobbies and friendships.’
The games, which are open for children in school year three upwards (ages six to 15) sees the island split into five teams, North, South and West.
The other two teams are East which is divided into Douglas North and Onchan as well as Douglas South and Braddan.
Across these five regions, there are 12 sports available including badminton, basketball, cricket, crown green bowls, girls football, hockey, netball, squash, swimming, table tennis, tag rugby and football for children with special educational needs.
Training sessions, which begin later this month, cost £1 per session.
Jaime Amoedo of event sponsor HSBC, said: ’HSBC is extremely proud to continue our support for the Manx Youth Games.
’Over the years the games have grown into a fantastic event which encourages young people to engage in different sporting activity.
’It is a privilege for HSBC to be involved in the games and be committed to the community in the island.’
