Local all-rounder Gianni Epifani is taking on a cycling challenge this weekend to raise money and awareness for the Isle of Man Foodbank.
Whilst he says that the main focus must remain on the NHS and the amazing job that the health services do, Gianni adds that we also need to understand that many families and individuals have lost so much of their income and are really struggling to provide basic needs.
’Isle of Man Foodbank always has a very important role to play, but now it’s massive,’ he emphasises. ’Food is not a nice-to-have, it is a necessity.’
Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been a 40 percent increase in demand for the IoM Foodbank.
Gianni’s plan is to ride his bike indoors (set up on a trainer) for 24 hours.
’I’m using a Zwift platform which is a virtual cycling world. If all goes to plan it will record the distance I cover in 24 hours. Zwift also allows other cyclists to join me during the ride.
’Whilst 24 hours won’t be easy, many frontline workers, not only in the NHS but delivery drivers, food shop workers and many more, are putting in 24-hour shifts to provide our essential services.’
Gianni, senior sport development officer for the Department of Education Sport & Culture (under the umbrella of Manx Sport and Recreation at the NSC), will start his 24-hour epic ride at 10.30am on Saturday. He will try and give regular live updates.
