Dan Halligan carded a superb 34 points last Wednesday to win Mount Murray Golf Club’s 14-hole club day competition sponsored by the Spa at Comis.

A card play-off on 32 points was required to decide the runner-up spot and it was Alyn Williams who had the better closing holes to get the nod over David Braide.

The Thursday roll-up was a very convivial affair - a special guest appearance by Greg Wenn resulted in him winning with 35 points which meant David Kay, who also scored 35, should have gone home with nothing.

But the president somewhat pressured Wenn into sharing the pot with Kay which (he said) he was happy to do! A nice touch.

It was the Premier Gateway International Club Championships at the weekend, with the 36-holer being played over the two days off the challenging white tees.

The trophy is presented to the best gross score of the weekend. Saturday saw Keith Ward take the lead at the halfway stage with an excellent two over par 73.

Donald Beggs, Neil Caine and Stu Wallace were all a couple of shots back on 75s, while Jack Gilbert, Julian Sutton and Andrew Horne were a further two shots adrift with their 77 gross scores.

Therefore, it was all to play for on Sunday morning, with beautiful calm conditions greeting members.

Ward was unable to match his form from the previous day but Gilbert shot the best score of the day, a fine one over par 72 for a 149 total.

Caine and Beggs shot 76 and 77 to finish on 151 and 152 respectively, but it was early starter Wallace who managed to hang on, shooting a fine 73 for a 148 total to snatch the silverware from Gilbert by a single shot.

Congratulations go to Wallace who gets his name on the prestigious trophy for the first time.

There were also some excellent performances in the nett category. Winning by a huge margin was junior member Zac Moore who put together two handicap-busting rounds of 68+61=129.

Sean O’Connell was next best with a splendid 69+70=138, taking second place on countback from Andrew Horne's 66+72=138.

The latest club day sponsored by the Spa at Comis took place yesterday (Wednesday) and there's the usual casual roll-up today (Thursday).

This Saturday, Isle of Man Golf Union stages the first round of the 72-holers at Mount Murray, meaning the Okell’s Summer Series Open will move to Sunday.
