The game of the weekend in Manx Hockey Association’s leagues this Saturday has to be the grudge match between Valkyrs A and Vikings A.
Last year Valkyrs took the Women’s Premier League title on a tense final day when Vikings couldn’t quite overcome the goal difference required to take top spot, meaning for the first time in 11 years Vikings A didn’t win the top flight title.
This match represents the All Blacks’ first chance to take strides to wrestling the title from the westerners.
Valkyrs this year have been in fine form, with a free-scoring attitude backed up by a mighty defence, and will be hard to break down by a similar if not as goal-happy side in the shape of Vikings.
What is for sure is that this is two titans going head-to-head and whoever wins will make themselves favourites for the title.
Elsewhere in the Women’s Premier League, Saracens A travel north to take on Ramsey A in what may represent a good chance for the sky blues to earn their first points of the season.
Finally, Bacchas A tackle Castletown A in what will be a great game to watch with both sides very evenly matched.
The Men’s Premier League sees Ramsey have a week off on Saturday as they travel to Liverpool to take on Nottingham University’s fifth team in the England Hockey Championships.
If rumours are to be believed, Ramsey are struggling to take a full squad with injuries taking their toll on the squad.
Bacchas A will be looking to take home a big score against the inexperienced Saracens side who last week managed to challenge Valkyrs A for large parts of the game but couldn’t quite get their finishing right.
This will represent a huge challenge for Saracens but will be a good test of their progress this year.
Vikings A take on Valkyrs A with the westerners currently sitting top of the league with two wins in two games and will be keen to cause an upset and remain top of the league.
Bacchas A and Vikings A remain the title favourites but Valkyrs A are well capable of spoiling the party.
Men’s Division One is an interesting league with all teams having a 100 per cent record in their own right: three teams with two wins in two games and three teams with two losses in two matches.
Castletown A, after dropping down from the Premier League last year, will be keen to put some points on the board as soon as possible to stave off any thoughts of relegation. They may fancy their chances against Vikings B who have become early challengers for the title.
Harlequins A put their perfect record on the line when they play Bacchas who are the huge title favourites at this early point of the season.
Valkyrs B take on Vikings C and, with both sides failing to earn a point this season, they will be keen to claim something from this game.
Women’s Division One see Harlequins A take on Bacchas B and Castletown B go up against Vikings B.
With the league leaders Valkyrs B having a weekend off, there is a chance for the rest to catch up.
Men’s Division Two sees Bacchas Colts aiming to surprise Ramsey B, while Castletown B welcome Bacchas C and Harlequins B take on Valkyrs C.
Women’s Division two see an east versus south and a north versus west battle with Vikings C taking on Saracens B and Ramsey B facing Valkyrs C.
