Ramsey Crookall Cronkbourne Bacchanalians were back playing in the newly-reformed England Hockey Men’s Championships (tier two) on Sunday.

The game was officiated by national league regular Gemma Jones and local umpire Vic Ferns.

Alderley Edge brought over a youthful side and Jamie Brown’s team were expecting a tough, physical battle.

The first 10 minutes were tetchy with robust challenges from both sides as the teams weighed each other up.

The first card was received by Chris Bass, but that didn’t stop the attacking play of the Whites.

The first goal of the game came from a Bacchas short corner, Andy Whiting flicking high to the goalkeeper’s left to settle the early nerves.

It soon became a two-goal lead for the home side when a goalmouth scramble led to the ball being bundled in by silver fox, Tony Bentley-Roberts, who was sharpest to react in the melee.

Bacchas then hit a purple patch, netting four times in the next 10 minutes. Whiting completed his hat-trick along, while a rebounded penalty corner finish from Craig Leece and a reverse-stick strike from Andy Vernon-Browne left the half-time score 6-0 to Bacchas.

Alderley Edge stepped up their game in the second half and created a much closer contest. After 20-minutes, the visitors’ efforts were rewarded with a slick, counter-attacking goal that was the best of the game.

Bacchas then found an extra gear as a fourth goal from Whiting and a deflection from Jonny Callow meant the Manx team won 8-1, winning both halves and progressing to round three. Thanks go to sponsor, Ramsey Crookall & Co.

The next round is on December 3.

l Vikings’ first XI travelled to Cheshire to take on Sale firsts in round two of the women’s tier two competition.

Two goals from Georgia Foxton (on her debut), plus one each from Kirsty Cooper and Kim Carney secured Vikings a good 0-4 away win.

LJ Ramsey were also in fine form beating Didsbury Nothern 9-1 in tier four of the men’s competition.

On the scoresheet for the northerners were Nat Smith (2), Billy Cain (2), Aaron Bell, Olly Brew, Connor Hird, Alex Kneale and Sam Moffatt.
