Manx Hockey Association’s indoor hockey finals night took place on Monday, providing fireworks and surprises.
Spectators and players were treated to some high-intensity and competitive action, featuring a large number of goals which added to the excitement.
In the first matches of the night, the mixed finals took centre stage, being played side by side in the NSC sports hall.
Bacchas A took on Valkyrs A and by half-time the former led six goals to one and were in danger of running away with it. No-one watching thought this could be recovered but Valkyrs managed to surprise everyone to bring it level 6-6 by the time the final whistle blew.
Not scoring during a half is unusual for any side but for one of Bacchas’ calibre not to score just shows how well Valkyrs did in the second half. This meant flicks to decide the title which Bacchas managed to win 4-3 in sudden death.
In the Mixed Division One final, Vikings Colts took on Harlequins and it was the latter who started the brighter of the two teams, deservedly opening the scoring via Chris Cave.
However, Vikings hit back and managed to go into half time 1-1. Although Harlequins dominated most of the game, it was Vikings who were able to finish their chances better and began to run away with it by making it 4-1 in a 10-minute period in the second half.
Despite Harlequins scoring a second well deserved goal, Vikings were able to sneak another goal just before full-time to make the win seem a lot more comfortable than it actually was.
The Men’s Premiership title was again between Bacchas A versus Valkyrs A, but the Bacchas men dominated from start to finish with a resounding 8-3 victory.
In the Women’s Premiership it was an all Vikings affair, with Vikings A taking on Vikings B. The experience of the A team overcame the young B side in a game played in great spirits.
In the Men’s Division One final, Vikings B took on Ramsey A and very quickly the former were 4-0 up, a lead they maintained until half-time.
It was a different story in the second half as Ramsey dominated but, despite their good response, they couldn’t quite catch Vikings.
The game of the evening easily went to Bacchas A versus Bacchas B in the Women’s Division One final.
Bacchas A went into the game as huge favourites against their own B side but the latter had some quality of their own coupled with experience from the likes of Sam Franklin.
In an end-to-end game, both teams managed to score nine goals each by the time the final whistle blew, meaning that flicks were needed to decide the championship.
Bacchas B were first to miss a flick but the A team couldn’t capitalise and in sudden death the B team were able to hold their nerve and win a tense final.
A huge thank you goes to Kim Carney, the MHA indoor coordinator, for organising the league this season as well as to the huge number of umpires giving up their time on a Monday night.
It has been a great season of indoor hockey, with more teams, more players and more umpires getting involved than previous seasons.
