The Isle of Man have made a flying start to the NatWest Island Games’ swimming competition grabbing three gold and one silver.

Olivia Marshall kicked off Monday evening’s gold rush in Gibraltar when she produced a staggering swim in the 100m buterfly to knock five seconds off her personal best and take victory in a 1 min 1.8 sec.

Marshall then teamed up with Emma Hodgson, Laura Kinley and Kiera Prentice to come from eighth to first in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay, pipping 2017 champions Guernsey and the Faroe Islands to the win.

Not to be outdone, the men’s line-up of Alex Bregazzi, Ben Kebbell, Euan MacMurchie and Joel Watterson then broke the island record as they ended Guernsey’s stranglehold on the event.

The Channel Island has won the men’s 4 x 50m in three of the last four games, but on this occasion were beaten into second by the Manx who stopped the watch at 1:41.75.

One of the team’s most experienced competitors, Laura Kinley, grabbed the evening’s other medal grabbing silver in the women’s 50m breastroke in a lifetime best of 31.3s.

Kinley’s fellow Commonwealth Games swimmer Steph Brew finished seventh in the race that was won by the Western Isles’ impressive Kara Hanlon.
