The island’s tennis team chipped in to the Isle of Man’s medal haul on Monday with a silver and bronze in the team competitions.

The women’s line-up of Laura Feely, Katie Harris and Karen Faragher narrowly lost the gold medal match to Gibraltar in front of a partisan home crowd at the sun-bathed Sandpits Lawn Tennis Club.

Feely lost her singles match with Gibraltarian dangerwoman Amanda Carreras, the world-ranked professional winning in straight sets.

Harris soon leveled the encounter overall when she beat Lindsay De Haro-Sene 6/3, 6/1 to set up a doubles decider between Feely and Faragher and Carreras and De Haro-Sane.

After a close first set which the hosts edged 6/4, the class of Carreras began to show as the Gibraltarians bagged a second home gold medal of the Games.

Reigning women’s doubles champions Feely and Faragher will be looking to bounce back when that competition starts later in the week.

Prior to the women’s success, the men’s team of Sean Drewry, Marc Chinn and Robert Comber lost their semi-final with Jersey 3-0, resulting in a bronze medal.

Drewry and Chinn had teamed up on Sunday to overcome number four seeds Aland 2-1.

Drewry had triumphed two sets to one over Lucas Forsström after a tie-break in the encounter’s opening singles match before Chinn lost be the same margin against Otto Byman.

The Manx pair then teamed up to triumph over their Scandinavian opponents in straight sets in the doubles.
