Legends and Fellas went head-to-head in the Isle of Man Basketball Association’s Women’s League at the NSC on Thursday evening.
Fellas had some new players to add to the team and, with a full squad, you would have expected them to be in control of the game.
But they didn’t tell that to Leanne Costa who was able to find a way through Fellas’ defence. The usual fast game that Fellas have was not on show in the first quarter as Legends restricted them to six points and ended the first quarter in the lead.
The second period was all about Wendy Owens with some nice outside shots and was backed up by Costa as they managed to pull the game further ahead and at the end of the half Legends were up 23-11.
At the start of the third quarter coach Dunne decided to change things around and, with Danielle Murphy finding her range, Fellas took control of the game. With hard work also from Becky Dunne and Gemma Kirkham, at the end of the quarter they were only one point behind Legends.
During the last quarter both teams worked hard in defence, with Legends keeping Fellas at bay until around the sixth minute with points from Sarah Corkish and again Costa.
But then, with the height advantage of Kirkham and Dunne, Fellas managed to come back and it was only in the last minute that they took the lead which was enough to sneak the game 40-38. Both teams worked hard but the final basket belonged to Kirkham.
Turkeys v Eagles
Turkeys had a bigger bench than usual for their game with Eagles in the Men’s Basketball League, even with Alan Walkinshaw still sidelined by injury.
However, Eagles started the game with two three-pointers from Ben Barlow and Abuu Migoda, only for Chris Wolfendale to follow suit with two of his own.
Eagles managed to hold off Turkeys, working hard in defence to keep both Wig Bregazzi and Jon Kinrade outside the key and Eagles ended the first quarter up by four points.
In the second quarter Eagles struggled to find any consistency and this left the door open for Wolfendale to score with ease to take Turkeys into the lead.
It was only points from Max Edwards for Eagles that kept them in the game during this quarter as Turkeys led by four points at half-time.
The third quarter started again with points from Wolfendale and Richard Smith but Eagles came out fighting, helped by baskets from Edwards and Barlow.
However, Turkeys always managed to keep the lead with Bregazzi running the ball well and scoring some nice points under the basket as Eagles were unable to stop him.
They managed to keep pulling away with more points from Wolfendale while Eagles were unable to get through their defence and the third ended 44-24 to Turkeys.
In the last quarter Eagles found it hard to match the intensity shown in previous games and this gave Turkeys an easier time than they perhaps should have had.
Once again it was Wolfendale who scored 18 of the 25 points as Turkeys claimed in the last quarter.
There were more points for Edwards and Bailey Daniels for Eagles but the damage had been done and Turkeys ran out winners 69-32.
Microgaming Cavaliers v Island games Select
This game was all about the island select gaining strong practice towards the Island Games in Gotland later this year.
The height advantage was big and had the island team working hard to contain Dave Minay and Wayne Mears but this was what the game was all about.
Cavaliers work the ball well and have a great passing game, something that is hard to practice against unless you play stronger teams. The select side found the basket with points from Becky Dunne and Gemma Kirkham as they ended the quarter nine points down.
In the second period Cavs showcased their strong all-round game with great a passing and then a clean finish as points from Tom Dalton-Brown ensured the second quarter ended 35-18.
The island select continued to work hard in defence and great work from Lauren Ellison helped keep Cavs out of the key for the first couple of minutes in the third quarter, but then again the height advantage was all about Dave Minay who was hard to stop under the basket and the period ended 53-25.
The island team managed to find a way through the key with points from Jess Carridge and Kirkham in the last quarter as again Mears kept finding a way through the key and the final score was 66-37 to Cavaliers.
Junior League
There were six teams playing in the Junior Basketball League last week, with round robin games for them all and a mixture of players taking part.
All the players enjoyed the games and with the same coaches with each team, the consistency is getting better each week.
As picked by the coaches, Antonio Lechanski and Matthew Sexton stood out for the Stars team, while Jack Coates and Chris Forrest did likewise for Turkeys and Eddie Caley and Ciaran Talbot shone for Eagles.
