Letisha Ellis has ended her season on a high by becoming the first member of team Microgaming Isle of Man Para Swimming to break a British age group record.

Letisha set the new GB deaf swimming record in the 12 years’ 50-metre freestyle event twice in a matter of weeks as she finished the season in style.

After last season’s successes which saw Letisha and team-mates Ben Grainger and Tom Callister all win British medals, Letisha has gone one step further to take a record that had stood for five years.

She was first notified of her record time of 31.84 seconds set at the British Junior Para Champs in Sunderland after the GBDSC newsletter was circulated last month.

July seemed to keep getting better for Ellis, when she lowered the new standard by a further 10th of a second to 31.70s at the recent Microgaming Sprint event at the National Sports Centre.

Mum Jo and dad Ste were shocked to hear of the record swim: ’As parents we never thought Letisha would be able to achieve what she has because of her hearing loss.

’However, Letisha has proved to parents, coaches and peers what she is truly capable.

’Her hard work means she is determined to succeed in whatever she does. Letisha’s determination is amazing and she is an inspiration to all who know her.

’To find out she has broken the Great Britain deaf swimming record in the 50m freestyle at the Sunderland para championships was amazing. Then she did it again at the Microgaming sprints.

’As parents we are bursting with pride and overwhelmed by her success.’

Chairman of the Great Britain Deaf Swimming Club Jim Joyce was delighted to see a new name being added to the list of S15 British records: ’I am always thrilled to see our younger swimmers performing so well locally and nationally with many personal bests being achieved recently.

’It is even more of a pleasure to see them succeed beyond personal bests with record-breaking performances so I am delighted to congratulate Letisha for setting a new 12 years’ short-course GB age group record.’

Letisha is looking forward to next season when she will compete with her able-bodied peers for a place in the National Arena League Team.

Corinthians and Castletown MFC won the Isle of Man FA’s Summer League Trophy and Plate titles after defeating Douglas Royal 2-0 and Peel 4-2 respectively in their finals.

Played in pouring rain, a Ballafletcher derby took place at the Bowl in the final of the Summer League Trophy.

Lisa Costain gave Corinthians a first-half lead, Alice Ashe adding the second after beating the offside trap with a speculative strike. Royal’s goalkeeper Rose Ozga had to be on top form, pulling off impressive saves to deny Ashe and captain Casey Halsall.

In the Plate final, Castletown, who last entered a women’s team in the 2012-13 season, defeated 2015 Summer League Trophy winners and 2016 finalists Peel at the NSC Astroturf.

The westerners went two goals up thanks to strikes from Sienna Dunn and Becky Corkish, but Town hit back thanks to strikes from Sarah Taylor (2), Olivia Toombs and Sara Ismail-Sutton.

IoMFA’s Treasurer Stephen Carter presented the silverware and medals to the winning teams.
