More than one thousand children took part in the first winter Go Run For Fun event at Noble’s Park last week.
The event was organised to encourage young people’s participation in sport at grassroots and community level.
It was aimed at primary school children and every single child is encouraged to take part regardless of ability. The event focuses on just running leisurely with no times or positions, so it is literally running for fun.
Isle of Man Athletic’s new development officer Hannah Riley played a key role in organising the event and was delighted with the turnout:
’No fewer than 1,178 primary school children took part in the event which was just amazing. Some primary schools missed out due to the fact we couldn’t have more than 1,200 participating for health and safety reasons.
’We had 40 volunteers from St Ninian’s High School and the Isle of Man College. Local athletes Rachael Franklin, Alan Corlett, Andrew Falconer and Leah Goddard also gave up their time to help out, cheer on, answer questions and sign numbers and t-shirts.
’We thought organising this type of event at this time of year would encourage more children to take up cross country, fell running or just keep running for fun.
’There was a fabulous response from the children who all seemed to love the event and we have received really positive feedback from parents and schools.
’I would like to thank the following: all the children that took part. It was absolutely fantastic to see so many pupils smiling, laughing and running; Alex Fothergill (GRFF) and Martin Higgins (Noble’s Park); the Go Run For Fun company; primary schools - Ashley Hill, Onchan, St Mary’s, Henry Bloom Noble, Willaston. Jurby and St John’s - without their help and patience, this event wouldn’t have gone ahead.
’A big thank you goes to the teachers involved in organising their pupils on the day which I know is no mean feat. Also thanks to the fabulous volunteers and parents - the children really appreciated your cheering and support.’
