The Isle of Man surged to the top of the medal table at the NatWest Island Games thanks to a superb day of action in Gotland on Tuesday.

It proved to be a successful day across a number of sports, with swimming, cycling and athletics all playing a key role.

The Manx swimmers were yet again in medal breaking form in the pool at Solbergabadet in Visby as Guy Davies clinched his second gold medal of the Games with victory in the men’s 50m breaststroke, with team-mate Brody Hewison claiming bronze.

Arguably the star of the day was Olivia Marshall who, at only 14 years old, stunned her rivals in the women’s 50m fly to set a new junior island record on her way to sealing the gold medal, thus ensuring that every member of the Manx swimming team has now won a medal.

The quartet of Alex Bregazzi, Hewison, Joel Watterson and Euan Macmurchie claimed silver in the men’s 4x50m freestyle relay before the Manx foursome of Laura Kinley, Steph Brew, Emma Hodgson and Marshall smashed the Island Games record to clinch gold in the women’s 4x50m medley relay.

Catherine Reid successfully defended her gold medal from Jersey two years ago when she eased to victory in the women’s 400m race on the athletics track at Gutavallen while team-mate Ashleigh Lachenicht was only just outside of the medals in fourth place in the same race.

Rachael Franklin earned a silver medal in the women’s 1,500m race while Amber Sibbald and Hannah Riley claiming silver and bronze respectively in the 100m hurdles.

There was heartbreak for Nick Corlett in the men’s mountain bike cross country as the Jersey gold medallist was forced to settle for silver this time around after narrowly being beaten in a sprint finish by Guernsey’s James Roe, while fellow Manxie Elliot Baxter was third.

Their efforts though, plus great rides by Alex Rockwell, Danny Curtis and Lee Gale, ensured that the Isle of Man clinched the team gold, adding to the silver that the women’s team of Kirree Quayle, Emma Atkinson and Emily Looker had won earlier in the day.
