Castletown A saw off newly- promoted Vikings C in the opening match of the season.

The home side won all four men’s doubles, with Nick Thornley and James O’Meara defeating Roy McLean and Matthew Garrett 21/16 21/13 and brothers Baillie and Fingal Watterson winning 21/7 21/11 against Josh Mills and Mark Falconer.

Melissa McKnight and Sophie Wade impressed as they beat Lauraine Williamson and Pim Charoenchai 13/21 9/21, before Lou Mellor and Ashleigh Keown restored a four-point lead for the hosts by beating Sam Spellman and Deirdre Hughes 21/8 21/8.

O’Meara/Williamson had a comfortable 21/9 21/10 win over Vikings reserves McLean/Wade. Third mixed was a tighter affair, Garrett/McKnight taking the first end quickly, but Thornley/Charoenchai were able to turn the tables in the next two ends winning 10/21 21/7 21/14.

Despite very respectable performances by Mills/Hughes and Falconer/Spellman, Castletown’s F. Watterson/Keown and B. Watterson/Mellor won the remaining fixtures 21/19 21/12 and 21/9 21/16 respectively.

A good win for Kirk Michael in this opening encounter, although the overall score did not reflect on how close some of the games were.

St Ninian’s started well with a convincing win over KM at second men’s. The home side then retaliated by taking the remaining level doubles sets in two games each.

The mixed pairings proved to be more challenging with fourth and second going to three games and third closely fought, but ultimately it was a victory for the home pairing as was the final set at first mixed.
