Latest results from Manx Netball Association’s league games played on Sunday, September 27:
Under-17s League
Suntera Global Ballasalla 1 - 19, Ramsey Blacks 41
This game began as an exciting prospect with each team going goal-for-goal before Ramsey Blacks managed to turn over one centre pass which gave them a slight lead at quarter-time.
Ballasalla maintained their determination asKayleigh Denton fought for everything at centre and Brintha Yasodaran caused Ramsey a few headaches in the circle, but Ramsey’s Katie Keenan was able to start entering the scoring circle with ease and the northerners capitalised on this, extending their lead to seven goals at half-time.
Ballasalla changed their team in the third quarter, moving Jemma Richardson to goal defence in an effort to halt Ramsey’s momentum. This worked for a short while, but Ramsey were again able to find their rhythm, even with new shooter Isla Gale coming into the game.
Ballasalla scored consistently and Sophie Radcliffe managed to put the ball in the net almost every time she got it, but the issue was getting the ball into the end third and past Ramsey’s wing defence Ava Brown who made numerous interceptions.
Through this, Ramsey were able to improve their goal count steadily over the game and eventually won 41-19.
Players of the Match: Ava Brown (Ramsey Blacks), Kayleigh Denton (Ballasalla 1).
Under-14s Division One
Castletown Stars 29,
Manx Gems Diamonds 9
Castletown Stars started their first game of the season strongly, with the first goal being scored by their GS Ruby Watterson.
An interception from Town meant they quickly scored their second goal, before accurate shooting from Gems’ goal attack secured their first goal of the game.
Strong defence from both teams put pressure on the centre passes and the ball was intercepted regularly. The first quarter finished 8-4 to Castletown Stars.
Gems came out strong in the next two quarters and worked hard, making the most of every turnover, but Castletown’s accurate circle defence meant Gems struggled to take possession of any rebounds.
All players had settled well by the final quarter and there were good passages of play alongside accurate shooting. The final score was 29-9.
Player of the Match for Castletown went to Mollie Zybert and for Manx Gems Diamonds it was Elitza Yordanova.
Simcocks Red Tails 36,
Thompson Tigers 7
As a result of several players turning out to support the club’s under-17s team, Simcocks took to the court with only five players knowing they would have to work hard in order to get the ball to goal.
Sharp shooting from Hannah Ashton-Forster (GA) quickly saw Simcocks take to the scoreboard but defensive pressure from Jenna Gelling (GD) and Niamh Moyer (GK) kept Thompson’s attack working hard, with Simcocks leading 17-4 at half-time.
Simcocks built on their momentum and, with mid-court turnovers from Kate Lace (C) and Aalish Webster (WA), it was down to Poppy Irving (GS) to keep scoring goals.
Emilia Steriopolous (C in Q4) continued to feed the circle well in the final quarter and Simcocks finished with a win 36-7. PotM: Poppy Irving (Simcocks Red Tails), Lauren Winrow (Thompson Tigers).
Under-14s Division Three
Manx Gem Amethysts 12, Castletown Comets 2
Both teams took a while to settle into their first game but there was some great passing and movement from Amethysts, although they found it hard to convert their chances.
Zahara Iqbal-Corkill (GS) began to find the net for Gems and they ended the first quarter two goals ahead.
The second period saw Amethysts’ Georgia Halsall move to GA and Isla Palmer to C, a combination which worked really well as they linked up beautifully with Erin Bell (WA) to feed the ball successfully to the shooters.
Comets were slow to respond to this new pairing which meant Gems were able to extend their lead to seven by half-time, with the defensive duo of Molly Bevan and Molly Needham intercepting the passes well and preventing Comets from scoring.
After half-time Comets came out determined to get on the scoresheet and linked well with their attackers as they began to look threatening in the circle. They duly scored two goals in this quarter, while some great defending came from the Comets pairing of Eva Dickinson and Evie De Backer.
The final quarter saw Gems extend their lead further and, despite some fantastic interceptions from Amethysts’ WD Zoe Bridson, Gems ran out 12-2 winners - a promising game from both teams, with many playing their first match in the Under-14 League.
PotM: Georgia Halsall (Manx Gem Amethysts), Callie Cubbon (Castletown Comets).
