With the domestic season over, interest turns off-island as LJ Partnership Ramsey Women A play Nuneaton HC second XI the England Hockey Championships’ Tier 4 Final.

Ramsey have been fortunate in their route to the final with a series of home draws.

Using the excellent pitch facilities at King William’s College as a competition base, they comfortably brushed aside an inexperienced Lymm team 8-0 in the first round back in November.

In the second round Golborne provided more stubborn resistance, Ramsey only gaining the upper hand in the final quarter of the game.

Burnt Ash from Kent proved stronger still in the semi-final and Ramsey had to dig deep coming from behind to win 3-2 in normal time.

The Manx side have demonstrated an ability to fight back in previous years in this competition and should prove to be a tough opponent for Nuneaton.

Little is known about the English team who play in the Warwickshire County League. Their route to the final included victories in normal time over Burton 3-1, Bishops Stortford 2-0, Oxford 6-2 and, in the other semi-final, King’s Heath 2-1.

Their championship run belies their league position this season and they have clearly found a goalscorer for their run to the final.

It is just possible that the squad has been strengthened by first team players not cup-tied in its early first-round exit from the Tier 2 competition.

It promises to be an excellent final and the Ramsey Women, most ably led by captain Lauren Brew, will need to draw upon all their experience from previous years in their quest for the trophy.

The match is being played at Lee Valley Stadium QE Olympic Park in London and should be a great occasion for the squad and a small band of travelling supporters.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Ramsey Women have entered EH knockout competitions and it has been a progressive profile for them, getting further each time. Quite an achievement for a small island-based club.
