Jonathan Rea bagged a further two podium finishes as the World Superbike series continued in San Marino over the weekend.

Only hours after being named an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list (see page two), the Castletown resident finished third in Saturday’s dramatic first race at the Misano circuit.

The Kawasaki man was involved in a last-lap incident with Chaz Davies, which saw the latter come off his Ducati when in the lead.

Davies was clipped by Rea’s bike as he low-sided right in front of him with only three corners to go. Davies suffered a fractured vertebrae in the collision, but it looks likely he will be fit to ride again at the next round in California over the weekend of July 7.

Rea also came off his bike in the incident, but managed to remount and claim the 100th podium finish of his career behind team-mate Tom Sykes and Alex Lowes.

Rea said: ’The plan was to just release the brake and go up the inside of Chaz on the last corner, but unfortunately for both of us it did not get that far. He made a mistake and tucked the front and I am super-sorry that I hit him but I had absolutely nowhere to go.’

On Sunday, Rea finished in second spot, after new championship rules saw him starting from seventh on the grid.

Rea leads the standings as it passes into the second half of the season, with 296 points to Sykes’s 246.

’I am really satisfied with the results today but unfortunately we could not challenge for the win because I felt we were struggling a little bit, as the rear tyre was completely out of balance. I was having a lot of rear vibration. That was really difficult to manage.’
