Vagabonds men beat Birchfield 24-14 at Ballafletcher on Saturday to keep up their push at the top end of Counties Four ADM Lancs/Cheshire.

Cal Donnell’s early try was converted by Cam Findlay for a 7-0 lead, before Birchfield replied in kind and the sides were tied 7-7 at half-time.

Birchfield doubled their score at the beginning of the second half but midway through Vagas skipper Matt Rockwell went over from a driving maul and Findlay converted to tie the game at 14-14.

Game-changer Rob Martin then put Vagas in front with a rare score, again from a driving maul and with Vagas enjoying set piece dominance, debutant Gavin Fletcher raced in for a try to secure the win and a try bonus point.

Vagabonds Ladies

beaten at home

Vagas women put in a good shift at a very windy Ballafletcher on Friday night but not good enough to tame visitors Liverpool St Helens who ran out 49-5 winners.

The high winds made play difficult, but the Vagas defence got stuck in and made life difficult for the unbeaten league leaders, including a 10-minute period at the end of the first half when Vagas were a player short after Sophie Henry had picked up a yellow card.

With her time served in the sin-bin, Henry returned in the second half and powered over for Vagas’ only score of the game.

Kyla Quayle put in another solid performance for Vagas, getting the nod for player of the match from the opposition, and home debuts were also made by youngsters Amber Summers, Caitlin Henery, Ella Wood and Hailey Reader.

Vagas face a tough week of training ahead of a trip to Southport this coming weekend for their next tie in the Papa Johns Intermediate Plate.
