Isle of Man badminton squad member Martin Cheung competed in an under-15s tournament in Leicestershire a fortnight ago.
There were 46 boys in the singles event, split into nine groups playing in round robin format. Martin topped his group by winning all four matches, taking him to the next round, but he lost in the quarter-finals.
The boys’ doubles was played in four round-robin groups of five pairs, with the winner of each group going forward to contest the semi-finals.
Martin played with his regular doubles partner, Jamie Wakefield from Oxfordshire, and they won three games in their group but lost the fourth 18-21 to a strong pair from Kent in what was a very pacey, attacking game with plenty of rallies. The latter pair later went on to take gold.
The mixed doubles were divided into two groups of five pairs, with the winner of each group contesting the final.
Martin teamed up with Anna Stewart from Hertfordshire and the pair played well together in coordinating attacking and defensive rallies during the game, even though this was the first time they had played together.
The pair subsequently topped their group after winning three matches convincingly with a higher score margin, but lost the final to a well-established siblings pair 15-21 to receive silver medals.
