Former Buchan Primary School student Stuart Rushmere has been selected to play for Great Britain’s under-21 hockey team at the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia.

The teenager is currently studying for his A-Levels at Millfield School in Somerset while playing for Bath University’s Buccaneers side.

Stuart’s family is originally from South Africa but moved to the Isle of Man when he was seven and he studied at the Buchan under the guidance of Neil McGregor.

During his time living in the island, he played junior football for four years at Union Mills and was in the Isle of Man under-12s team, whilst also representing North of England Under-11s at rugby.

The youngster continued to pursue various sports once he began studying at Millfield, competing in rugby, football, cricket and hockey for the school’s first teams, on top of which he played for Exeter City’s football academy for three years and was in the Somerset winter squad at cricket. But it was in hockey where he thrived and, after working his way up through the England ranks over the past few years, the talented teen was named captain of the u18s team for this year’s Euro Hockey tournament in Santander, Spain.

Rushmere was one of the team’s standout players during the tournament, scoring five of England’s 12 goals in the tournament, and was duly selected for the u21 side for the Sultan of Johor Cup.

The week-long competition is being held in the state capital of Johor Bahru and gets underway this Saturday.
