Isle of Man Table Tennis Association’s annual senior Top 12 competition took place at the Buchan school over the weekend.

The first round was played in two groups of six players. Group A was dominated by title holder and number one seed Sean Drewry, topping the group with straight set wins.

The second-placed player was Julian Briercliffe with four wins as he only lost to Drewry.

The top seed in group two, Malcolm Cummings, wasn’t having such an easy time as he lost to Paul Corran 13/11, 9/11, 5/11, 10/12. However, he managed to top the group after a countback, while taking the runner-up spot was Mike Tamarov.

The top two players in each group went on to contest the first four places of the tournament.

In the first semi-final match Drewry played Tamarov and the score of 13/11, 9/11, 11/3, 11/6 was enough to secure a place in the final for the former.

Fighting it out in the second semi were Briercliffe versus Cummings, with the former scraping through with an 11/9 score in the fifth end.

Drewry then retained his title by beating Briercliffe in straight sets, 11/9, 11/7, 14/12.

Playing for places 5-8 were Rhys Yardley, Khayee Vinas, Paul Corran and Juan Moore.

The first crossover match was between Yardley and Corran, with the latter taking the win 9/11, 11/9, 7/11, 8/11, before the second crossover between Moore and Vinas saw saw Khayee winning 11/8, 9/11, 4/11, 2/11.

The match for seventh and eighth place saw Moore edging out Yardley in four ends, while fifth was taken by Corran leaving Vinas in sixth after losing 10/12 in the fifth end.

Places 9-12 were contested by Tim Baker, David Parsons, Mike Dunning and Andy Patterson - they finished in that order.

JUAN MOORE WINS MALCOLM LOOKER MEMORIAL JUNIOR TOP 12

The Junior Top 12 competition also took place at the Buchan school on Sunday.

Topping the seedings was Juan Moore who was having a busy weekend after finishing seventh in the previous day’s Senior Top 12 event.

The first round was played in two groups. Group A was won by Moore with five wins, while the runner-up spot was taken by Kerenza Baker who only lost to the group winner.

In Group B Sasha Thomas wasn’t troubled winning all five matches in straight sets, finishing ahead of Freya Melvin who recorded four wins out of her five matches.

These players were to contest the first four places and the first semi-final saw Moore beating Melvin in straight sets while Baker gave Thomas tough time, taking him to the fifth end after being two games up but eventually losing 9/11.

Playing for third place Melvin and Baker demonstrated some excellent table tennis, with the latter coming out the winner in four sets.

The final between Moore and Thomas was won in three sets by Moore.

Places 5-8 saw Lily Byrne, Kitty Thomas, Tiernan Garvey and Libby Quaggin take to the tables.

The first crossover between Byrne and Quaggin which was a straight sets win for the latter, before Garvey and Thomas played in the second crossover and resulted in Garvey coming out the winner in four sets.

Fifth place was taken by Garvey after he beat Quaggin 11/8, 11/8, 11/8, while Byrne was beaten into eighth place with Thomas winning 11/13, 5/11, 16/14, 15/17.

Places 9-12 were contested by Callan Reed, Louis Faragher, Leo Doyle and William Dalugdugan. Reed beat Doyle and Faragher defeated Dalugdugan before Reed went on to beat Faragher for ninth spot and Doyle took 11th place after beating Dalugdugan.

Many of these junior players will be representing the Isle of Man during the summer months by playing in the British Primary School Tournament in Cardiff in April and the Senior Schools Tournament in Jersey in June.
