The much-delayed title play-off in Manx Netball Association’s Premier League took place last weekend.

With the season coming to an abrupt end in March because of coronavirus, with one round of matches left to play the leagues were pretty much already sewn up.

The exception was the Premier League where the match of the season was still to take place between Simcocks Red and SMP Ballasalla A.

With Simcocks having won the last league meeting between the sides, it looked like Balla A would have their work cut out if they were to take the title, needing to beat Simcocks by more than half points.

As the first whistle went the energy was high, with both teams taking a moment to settle into the game. It was great to see all the players back on court but especially Simcocks’ GA Aalish returning from injury who scored the opening goal. Unfortunately, Simcocks’ GS Ellan Charmer tweaked a knee and was replaced by Heather Parsons.

With Balla GS Gemma Kirkham strong under the post and taking some great feeds in from Ashley Hall (WA) plus quick passes from Kate Williams, Simcocks knew it would be a good battle. Simcocks’ WA Claire Belcher-Smith had a calming effect and made some great decisions which helped her side begin to find some rhythm and they led the first quarter 10-5.

In the second period both teams worked tirelessly for every goal, with Rachel Johnstone consistently creating space and making offers as Simcocks managed to get the ball to the circle edge.

Ballasalla’s defence of Ciara Jacobs and Jane Ryder-Clague worked hard to restrict the shooters’ rotation and the quarter ended 19-11 with Simcocks still leading.

The third quarter was a really close affair, with Simcocks only edging it by a single goal which shows the resilience and determination of both teams. With Ryder-Clague reading the game well and coming out with some great turnovers supported by Ciara Jacobs (GK) and Ella Carridge (WD), it started to create more opportunities for Balla.

But with Vivia Stawna, Becky Hempsall and Natalie Swales in defence for Simcocks, they played an equally hard game and it proved to be a strong defensive quarter.

The final quarter continued to be an entertaining game with a showcase from the two top teams. There were interceptions, brilliant balls throughout the court, some fantastic court craft and words of encouragement.

With Aalish Bridson starting to create space in the shooting circle and Parsons controlling some hard-to-reach backline balls, it was Simcocks Red that finally won the 2019-20 Premier League title with a 38-23 victory.

Both teams would like to thank sponsors Simcocks Advocates and SMP Partners, along with the supporters who turned up to cheer the sides on during the game.
