Castletown Lawn Tennis Club’s championship finals day was held recently at the Malew Street courts.
The mini tennis red had an excellent entry and was played in three groups, with the winners of each group and the highest scoring runner-up going through to the semi-finals.
In the semis, Darcey Garrett beat Cameron Garrett 5/1 and Tom Coates defeated Samuel Kinnish 5/1, then in a closely-contested final Tom beat Darcey 5/4.
The mini tennis orange was played as a round robin and the final result could not have been much closer, with only three points covering the top three. Coming out on top was James Ashley with 32 points and Jonas Austin was runner-up on 31. Just missing out was Thomas De Carte on 29.
The girls under-16 final was won by the more-experienced player Sophie Wright who, as the holder, beat Amy Jackson 6/0.
The boys under-16 title was claimed by last year’s runner-up Cameron Goldie who defeated David Taylor 6/1.
The women’s singles final was a close encounter going to a third-set match-tie break.with Justine Torry beating Lucy Kerr 6/3 1/6 10/4. In the men’s singles final, 2018 runner-up Craig Blackwell got the better of Alan Macnair 6/2 6/2.
There was a playback competition for the men’s first-round losers and in the final Peter De Carte came out on top against Peter Skelton 6/1 6/3.
The women’s doubles final saw the two singles finalists, Lucy Kerr and Justine Torry, win in two sets 6/0 6/0 against Amanda Munro and Jenny Foy.
The men’s doubles final was also a two-set match, with Neil Ronan and Rob Mason winning 6/2 6/3 against Richard Kerr and Alan Macnair.
The trophies were presented at a dinner and social evening at the George Hotel in Castletown where a number of other prizes were presented for events played throughout the season.
Grand Slam winners - Nerijus Gricevicius (Ronan Cup), Caroline Davies (Wilkinson Cup).
End-of-summer season tournament - Bob Borland and Charlotte Walker. Club award - Peter De Carte. Junior club award - Sophie Wright, Amy Jackson and Cameron Goldie.
The team captains - Craig Blackwell, Hannah Snidal, Richard Kerr, Juan Corrin, Carole Ennett and Neil Ronan - were also presented with a token of thanks.
