Charlotte Atkinson became the island’s first British swimming champion in nearly half a century on Wednesday evening.

The reigning Isle of Man Sportswoman of the Year claimed gold in the 50m butterfly on the second day of the British Swimming Championships in Sheffield.

The Loughborough University swimmer ducked under 27 seconds for the first time to take the touch in 26.81, becoming the ninth fastest Brit of all time in the process.

’I’m so happy,’ said Atkinson.

’I wasn’t expecting that so I’m buzzing. I’ve always made finals but never medals so to come out of there with a gold feels amazing.’

City of Derby’s fastest qualifier Sophie Yendell was second home, lowering her British 15 years age group record from the heats to touch in 26.90.

Welsh swimmer Alys Thomas took bronze in 26.94.
