Manx swimmer Charlotte Atkinson clinched a hat-trick of medals for Great Britain in the Luxembourg Euro Meet over the weekend.
The reigning Isle of Man Sportswoman of the Year enjoyed an exciting weekend competing as part of the 16-strong Team GB in the meet, which saw 819 athletes from 26 nations compete against many of the biggest names on the international stage.
Her first day of competition saw Charlotte compete in the 50m and 200m butterfly where she qualified comfortably for both finals the following day.
Although she was ranked fifth going into the 50m final, Atkinson fought a strong and determined race throughout to claim the bronze medal behind world record holder and current world champion Sarah Sjostroem from Sweden.
Just an hour later Charlotte faced the gruelling 200m butterfly over four lengths of the pool.
While this was the first long-course race of the season for Charlotte, she stayed strong throughout, following a well-structured race plan, to claim another bronze medal behind current European champion Franziska Hentke from Germany.
The third day of racing saw Atkinson being selected to form part of GB’s first team in the 4x100 mixed medley relay made up of Christopher Walker-Hebborn backstroke, Adam Peaty MBE breast stroke and Aimee Willmott freestyle.
In an extremely impressive and exciting race, the team lead from the start.
Charlotte swam a powerful third leg taking over from Peaty to uphold a strong lead and help secure gold and a new meet record time of 3.52.54, ahead of GB’s second team and smashing the old record of 3.54.30 previously held by Russia.
Following on from success in the medley relay, Charlotte then faced the 100m butterfly final where she claimed fourth position in a time of sub one minute, which was on target so early in the season.
Following three days of competing against an extremely strong international field, a delighted Charlotte commented:
’I’ve had a brilliant time competing as part of Team GB. This has all been part of my preparation for the major meets later in the year, and an opportunity for me to work on my race plans ahead of Commonwealth Games.
’It’s so exciting to have been selected to be one of five swimmers to represent the Isle of Man in the Gold Coast, and there’s no doubt we’ll all do our very best to make the island proud.’
