Will Corkill won the first round of Manx Viking Wheelers’ winter hill climb series in dry but cool conditions at Dalby on Sunday morning.

The Glen Vine teenager clocked a time of 6min 16sec for the steep climb from the Ballacallin to the junction with the Eary Cushlin track - a distance of 1.8 miles.

This was eight seconds quicker than runner-up Tyler Hannay, who in turn had nine seconds in hand over Simon Skillicorn in third place.

James Harrison was fourth in 6.35, with leading under-14 rider Callum Salisbury a very good fifth overall in 6.46.

Niall Quiggin was sixth in 7.18, followed by Brayden Roche in 7.21.

Relative novice, 12-year-old James Kinrade, produced one of the rides of the day to finish eighth in 7.34, pipping fellow youth rider Ivan Sorby by a solitary second.

Leading woman, Island Games triathlete Lynsey Elliott, claimed the final place in the top-10 leaderboard with a time of 7.57.

This was more than one minute quicker than road racer Kate Priest who had a 42-second gap over mountain biker Emma Atkinson.

A total of 22 riders took part in the event, and it was particularly encouraging to see quite a number of youngsters included.
