As part of the Year of Our Island’s ’Quality of Life’ celebrations, the team are encouraging people to share what they believe makes the Isle of Man such a special place to live and work.
Through social media, the project has been asking people to post comments about how living on our island enhances their quality of life. Respondees have the chance to win the last two tickets to the ’Great Manx Shindig’, a new family and music festival taking place at the end of this month, which is supported by the Year of Our Island.
Change and reform project lead, Jennie Wheeler, said: ’We’ve received some amazing responses from people across the Isle of Man. Whether through pictures or in words, people have been sharing their stories about why they love living here.
’We also want to take this opportunity to remind people to enter our photography competition, which we launched earlier this year.’
The Year of Our Island photography competition offers snappers the opportunity to win up to £250. The competition is open to all and focuses on the three key themes of the Our Island Project: Quality of Life, National Pride and Stronger Partnerships. Entrants have until December 31 to submit their photos.
Comments received on social media provide just a flavour of people’s views and opinions on why people love the Manx way of life:
’Our landscape means that 10 minutes one way I can be in a plantation or at the base of a hill ready for a hike or an adventure and 10 minutes another way I can be on a beautiful beach ready to swim, rest or play. Anywhere you look there is something to do and explore!’
Others have pointed to the island’s community spirit: ’I love the sense of community, it’s such a safe place and a kind environment full of lovely Manxies.
It’s small but full of good vibes, great local food, talent, music and craft.’
One new resident shared her affection for the island: ’Not only is it stunning in so many ways, glorious scenery, glens, beaches and coves - but the pace of life, friendliness of local residents, and the relaxed mind-set mean a person automatically slows down and lets go of the ’rat race’ mentality.
’The Isle of Man, truly a precious jewel in the sea and hopefully my home for many more years to come.’
