A 54-year-old crashed his car into an oncoming van while drink-driving on New Year’s Day a court has heard.

Simon John Morris, of Kerrowmoar, Sulby, will be sentenced on March 30 after a probation report has been prepared.

Prosecuting advocate James Robinson told the court that Morris was driving a Nissan Navara at 3.15pm on January 1 on Douglas Road in Ballasalla.

He was heading towards Ballabeg when he collided with a van coming in the opposite direction.

Police attended the accident, which had caused the road to be blocked, and Morris failed a roadside breathalyser test.

He was taken to Noble’s Hospital and then to police custody at 7.10pm.

At police headquarters he failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 62. The legal limit is 35. However, an expert’s back calculation stated that, at the time of the accident, the reading would have been not less than 93.

Further inquiries also revealed that Morris was not insured.

He pleaded guilty to drink-driving and having no insurance and defence advocate Deborah Myerscough asked for a probation report to be prepared before sentencing.

Magistrates ordered that the report consider all options, including custody.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with conditions to contact probation, reside at his home address, and not leave the island without court consent.
