A 36-year-old Douglas man has been sentenced to community service after he was involved in a fight in Ramsey.

Paul Mark Grant, of Hope Street, admitted affray and was ordered to do 80 hours’ unpaid work.

Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court how, on the evening of September 22, Grant was involved in a verbal argument with a man outside Bar Logo.

Grant was said to have been the more aggressive of the two men.

The court heard that he put down his drink and coat and ran up to the other man causing the two of them to end up rolling on the ground.

They were separated by members of the public and the other man walked off.

However, Grant was said to have approached him again and grappled with him.

Police arrived and Grant was taken to hospital after suffering injuries during the fight.

However, he then left A & E without receiving treatment and was said to have been aggressive and trying to push past police.

When interviewed later Grant told police he could not remember the incident.

He was shown CCTV footage and accepted he had been aggressive.

He said that he did not know the man he had been fighting with or why he had behaved as he did.

Grant said that while he was in Bar Logo he had argued with his ex-girlfriend which had resulted in him downing four shots which may have contributed to his behaviour.

Defence advocate David Clegg handed in a letter of apology to the court written by his client. ’This is a young man who has been out of trouble for some time,’ said the advocate. ’He completely accepted responsibility. He understands he was the instigator of this and without him, it wouldn’t have happened.

’He apologises unreservedly to the court and the other party.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered Grant to pay £125 prosecution costs.
