A banned driver was more than twice the legal drink-drive limit and carrying cocaine when he was seen by police driving a car with a front wheel missing.

Police reported sparks coming from a wheel, along with a grinding noise, of a car being driven by John Charles Walster, of Endfield Avenue, * Port St Mary.

Walster, aged 29, was stopped on Richmond Hill, in Braddan, on December 1.

He appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes on Tuesday, where he admitted charges of drink-driving, driving while disqualified and having no insurance, and possession of cocaine.

He will be sentenced on January 14 after a probation report has been completed.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court that Walster was banned from driving for 30 months in March 2010 with an order to retake his test at the end of his ban.

On Sunday (December 1) at 1.20am, police on patrol in Braddan saw Walster driving a Ford Fiesta on Richmond Hill.

When stopped, they found that a front wheel was missing from the car and Walster was said to be slurring his speech and be smelling of alcohol.

He failed a roadside breathalyser test and was taken to police headquarters.

Once there, he tried to swallow a small package but was stopped from doing so.

The package contained white powder and was later confirmed as 0.1 grams of cocaine worth £10.

Walster failed a further breathalyser test with a reading of 100 - the legal limit is 35.

When interviewed Walster gave details about his movements and drinking but would make no comment about the cocaine.

Defence advocate Paul Glover asked for a probation report to be compiled before sentencing.

High Bailiff Mrs Hughes ordered that the report consider all options, including custody.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with conditions not to drive, reside at his home address, contact probation, and not leave the island without court permission.
