A banned motorist who got behind the wheel to take a car to be scrapped will be sentenced at the Court of General Gaol Delivery.
Stewart Scott, of Ashley Park, Onchan, was disqualified from driving for six years in November 2015 and jailed for 12 weeks for drink-driving.
On February 5, Scott, 53, he was arrested by police on Main Road in Onchan and charged with driving while disqualified, having no insurance and having a vehicle in a dangerous condition. He has admitted the charges.
When arrested, Scott told officers: ’I’m seasoned at this. I know I’m not being nicked for no reason. Of course I’ve done it.’
Defending Scott in court his advocate James Peterson said: ’He freely admits he has a rather colourful history.
’He has been banned on more than one occasion and convicted of driving whilst disqualified.
’Those offences were related to the consumption of alcohol. Recently his life has changed somewhat. After he last came out of prison he has drank on only two occasions, a significant change to his previous offending.’
He added: ’The car was bought for his partner to learn to drive. He decided to get rid of it and was taking the car to be scrapped. He realises he shouldn’t have done it.’
Mr Peterson argued that the maximum six months’ custody sentencing powers of the summary court for the offences would be sufficient but magistrates ruled that the case should go to the higher court.
Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with a condition not to leave the island without court permission.
