A manager from Barclays Bank has been jailed for drink-driving after failing a breathalyser test with a reading of 161 - the legal limit is 35.
Donna Butler, of Lakeside Road, Onchan, admitted the offence and was also banned from driving for six years.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced 39-year-old Butler to eight weeks in prison and told her: ’It is quite disgusting that anyone should even think about getting behind a wheel with that quantity of alcohol in their system.
’A message has to be sent to people who feel it’s appropriate to drive after consuming that amount of alcohol.’
Butler was seen by a witness driving on Summerhill Road and Blackberry Lane on February 17.
Her car was said to be straddling the centre line in the road, veering left and right, narrowly avoiding cones and colliding with a kerb. She was arrested at her home.
Butler was said to have been drinking on the Saturday night and then again from the Sunday lunchtime into the afternoon.
Defence advocate Jim Travers said: ’Ms Butler has enjoyed a very impressive working record throughout her adult life and is supported by references.
’She has spent 19 years serving a local institution where she is highly thought of. She acknowledges the real risk she posed to other road users.
’The high reading has captured the headlines. It would be fair to say Ms Butler has had a strained relationship with alcohol for several years.
’The scenario is the culmination of her struggles but it also represents an opportunity for her.’
Mr Travers went on to refer to matters in a probation report, described as a ’great deal of tragedy’, which he did not wish to be aired in open court.
The advocate said that Butler’s usual source of support was away and she had gone to a public house after feeling isolated.
’There had been no intention to drive. However, Ms Butler had consumed so much, she did so in a drunken stupor. It is remarkable she made it back to her driveway without a collision.’
Mr Travers said that Butler had self-referred to Motiv8 and Cruse Bereavement.
Mrs Hughes also ordered that Butler retake her test at the end of the ban and attend a drink-driving rehabilitation course.
’She has ceased drinking completely,’ he said. ’She has done everything in her power to try to overcome her difficulties since this offence.’
