A biker suffered a broken ankle and dislocated shoulder after being hit by a car, magistratges have heard.
Anne Julie MacLeod, aged 58, of Grenaby Road, admitted causing serious bodily harm by driving without due care or consideration. She has been fined £1,000 and banned from driving for 12 months.
Prosecutor Mark Benson told Thursday’s court that the crash happened at the roundabout adjoining Governor’s Road, Summerhill Road and Main Road in Onchan during Manx Grand Prix practice week last year.
The biker said he was riding his Peugeot scooter towards the Grandstand approaching the roundabout. He said there was a slight kink to the right in the lane but he could see MacLeod’s Ford Focus coming up Summerhill Road about 20 yards away.
The man said he was nearly out of the roundabout when the Focus came straight on and flicked his scooter, knocking him off. MacLeod and her husband stopped and assisted at the scene.
The biker said he did not want to go to hospital and continued to ride his bike but the following day was suffering shoulder and ankle pain.
An x-ray revealed the injuries and he had two pins put in his ankle after surgery and his shoulder repositioned as he spent 10 days in hospital.
Advocate Jim Travers said his client had driven for many years and had a clean driving licence: ’It was a momentary lapse of attention at a well-known roundabout.
’It’s difficult to fathom why she didn’t see the scooter. Once her attention was drawn she attempted to take remedial action. She assisted in assuring the scene was safe, it is a busy road. He was helped to the side of the road and sat on a chair.’
He added: ’She has had many sleepless nights reflecting on what happened.’
MacLeod must retake her test at the end of the ban.
