Staff from the Royal Logistics Corps Bomb Disposal Unit have been on the island today, working with the Coastguard to safely dispose of a piece of WW2 ordnance.

The mortar round was found by a member of the public on Sunday near the Raad Ny Foillan in the area of Spanish Head.

After liaising with the Joint Services EOD Operations Centre in the UK, an Army Bomb Disposal Team was tasked to the island on the overnight sailing from Heysham.

The mortar round was successfully disposed of in-situ using a controlled explosion at 12.15pm this afternoon.

The area was used during WW2 for training by the army and mortar rounds have occasionally been found in the vicinity.

A Coastguard spokesman said: ’We would like to remind the public that should they find any object on the coast that they believe to be suspicious or dangerous, they should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’
