Boredom and alcohol were the root cause of one man’s offending, a probation report found.
Liam Luke Kaighin, aged 22, of Christian Road, Douglas, was sentenced to community service and probation when he appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes on Tuesday.
He admitted offences of resisting arrest, threatening behaviour, disorderly behaviour on licensed premises, and possessing cannabis.
The combination order is made up of 80 hours of community service and 12 months’ probation.
He was also banned from entering licensed premises and purchasing or being sold alcohol for 12 months.
The most recent offence occurred on September 26 when police were called to a flat in Woodbourne Square in Douglas after reports of shouting and swearing.
Witnesses reported hearing what they thought was the sound of a door being kicked in.
Police found a group of men on the landing in the building and Kaighin inside a flat. Kaighin appeared injured and was arrested on suspicion of affray.
However, as officers took him into custody he pulled his arm away and threw a bag out of the kitchen window. The bag was found and contained cannabis.
No weight or value was given in court but it was said to be a small quantity.
Kaighin was charged with cannabis possession but was already on bail for previous offences of resisting arrest, threatening behaviour and disorderly behaviour on licensed premises.
Defending Kaighin in court, advocate Paul Rodgers said that the resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour on licensed premises offences were towards the bottom end of the scale for those type of offences.
Mr Rodgers said his client had served the equivalent of a 12-week sentence while on remand.
Addressing the probation report, the advocate said: ’Community service would be a way of getting him back on track.’
Mr Rodgers said his client was working with Motiv8 and mental health services and that a place at probation accommodation David Gray House was available to him.
Kaighin was also ordered to pay £250 prosecution costs.
