A 35-year-old Laxey woman has been fined £300 for careless driving.

Katherine Ann Sutherland, whose address was given as Fairy Cottage, crashed into another vehicle a traffic lights causing it to overturn.

Magistrates also endorsed her licence with four penalty points.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court that, on October 15 at 3.10pm, Sutherland was driving a Subaru along Woodbourne Road in Douglas.

She was said to have gone through a red light at the crossroads at York Road and hit a Volkswagen, causing it to overturn in the road.

The driver of the Volkswagen only suffered minor injuries.

Sutherland told police: ’I was stopped at the red light and it turned green.’

Defence advocate Darren Taubitz entered a basis of plea in which Sutherland said she had stopped at the lights and was not travelling at speed.

She said that she started from a stop position and travelled a very short distance before the accident.

Mr Taubitz said that his client had been driving for 20 years with only one previous conviction in 2012.

The advocate said: ’Ms Sutherland could have contested this matter. Some of the witnesses were unable to say what colour the lights were on. Only one witness said they were on red.

’She has saved witnesses from having to attend court and saved a lot of valuable court time.

’It was a momentary lapse. No-one really knows what particularly happened, it was one of those things. It was a pure accident.’

Magistrates also ordered Sutherland to pay £50 prosecution costs.
