A Douglas woman has been sentenced to community service by a magistrates’ court after stealing a baby monitor and perfume from a chemist.
Amanda Marran, of Woodbourne Road, pleaded guilty to a joint theft charge, committed with Abigail Jayne Paterson, of Albany Road, Douglas.
Marran, who is 53, was sentenced by magistrates to 40 hours’ community service and ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
We previously reported how Paterson was sentenced to 80 hours’ community service after a separate court appearance on an earlier date.
Prosecutor Richard Butters told the court how, on March 27, Marran had gone to the cash till in Boots with a basket of items.
Numerous items were scanned and paid for, but three items, a baby monitor costing £90.99, and two bottles of perfume, worth £135.50 and £104, were not scanned by Paterson who was working on the cash till.
The total value of the stolen items was £330.49.
Mr Butters said that Marrin’s only previous convictions in the Isle of Man were for failing to return tax forms in 2011 and 2012.
The prosecutor added that the co-accused, Paterson, has already been ordered to pay compensation to Boots for the items.
Defending Marran in court, her advocate Louise Cooil said that the £860 compensation paid by the co-accused had included the cost of items relating to a separate incident.
The advocate said: ’We can’t say if the items were recovered. Ms Marran didn’t have them after she returned home. The co-accused had them.
’My client was not in the position of trust the co-accused was in. The items were of a relatively small value.
’She has no other offences of a similar nature. Ms Marran wasn’t comfortable with the proposal and took out money to pay for the items but was persuaded not to pay.
’It was not an immediate guilty plea, it was a case of putting her head in the sand and hoping it would go away.
’It has caused her great stress. The co-accused was her son’s partner.
’Ms Marran is reliant on her hobby of upscaling furniture to sell and probation have identified a placement for community service in line with her hobby.
’We would ask that she pay £20 per week towards any financial penalty, though she may be reliant on her partner to pay it for her, she is going to make every effort to pay it herself.’
Chair of the magistrates Carol Maddrell said: ’We will sentence you to 40 hours community service and make an order that you pay prosecution costs of £125.’
Marran will pay the costs at a rate of £20 per week, starting on Friday, August 4, with 10 days in default of payment.
