A petrified couple defended themselves from a late night intruder by smashing a vase over his head.

Shaun David Bignall had broken into the couple’s flat and assaulted the pair.

The woman called 999 and when police arrived they found Bignall lying on his back on the pavement with a cut to his head.

Bignall, aged 29, of North Shore Road, in Ramsey, initially denied the assault and claimed he was the victim of an unprovoked attack.

But when he appeared in court on Tuesday he admitted two charges of common assault, one charge of indecent assault on an adult and damaging property.

He will be sentenced on January 22 after a probation report has been completed.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told Magistrates that Bignall was heard banging at the couple’s door at 3.50am on November 17.

The man got out of bed and found Bignall had broken in and was standing in the doorway.

Bignall hit the man, who fell to the floor.

Bignall was said to have put his knee on the man’s chest and pushed him down with his hands on his neck.

The woman called ’999’ and tried to get Bignall off her partner.

But Bignall was then said to have grabbed her and tried to take her out of the flat with him.

The row continued as Bignall again launched himself at the man in the flat, then bit his toe and stamped on his knee.

Bignall was said to have shouted: ’I’m going to break his knee.’

The court heard he wolfwhistled as he put his hands inside the woman’s onesie, before getting on top of her and pinning her down.

The man then smashed a vase over Bignall’s head in an attempt to stop him before the couple managed to blockade Bignall outside the flat.

Hospital

Police arrived and found Bignall lying on his back the pavement outside with a cut to his head.

He was taken to hospital and later arrested.

The couple told the police they had been ’petrified’ by Bignall’s behaviour and the man was said to have suffered swelling to his knee.

In a police interview Bignall handed in three prepared statements denying the offences, saying he had been hit over the head by the man in an unprovoked attack.

Defence advocate David Clegg asked for the probation report to be prepared before sentencing.

Bignall was remanded in custody while he is assessed for a place at probation accommodation David Gray House.
