A motorist has been fined £1,000 for driving while disqualified.
Hiram Abrahams, of King Edward Road, in Onchan, also had his licence endorsed with six penalty points.
The court heard that Abrahams, aged 46, was disqualifed in May 2015 for three years with an order to retake his test.
Prosecutor Richard Butters told the court how, on September 9, Abrahams was seen by police driving out of McDonalds on Peel Road.
He was initially stopped and spoken to about his speed but checks revealed he had not retaken his test after his ban ended.
Abrahams was arrested and told police: ’I was just going to get a cup of coffee so I could study more.’
Defence advocate Jim Travers entered a basis of plea for his client in which Abrahams said that he had taken his test in his native South Africa in June and received his licence in August.
He said that he had then unwittingly returned to the Isle of Man roads.
’Mr Abrahams submits this was a misunderstanding, one he takes full responsibility for,’ said Mr Travers.
’He observed the ban in full before taking his driving test in his native South Africa.
’He was stopped on a Sunday during a routine break. He was taking a break whilst studying for professional exams. Insurance was in place and a breathalyser test was passed.’
References were handed in for Abrahams and Mr Travers continued: ’It is clear he is an extremely well thought of professional.’
The advocate went on to ask that no further ban be imposed, as the previous ban remains in place until Abrahams passes a Manx test.
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered Abrahams to pay £125 prosecution costs.
