A delivery driver from Glen Vine has been fined £570 for four driving-related offences.

Keith Darren O’Sullivan, of Ballagarey Road, admitted using a mobile phone while driving, failing to wear a seat belt, a licence offence, and having no vehicle licence.

Magistrates also endorsed his licence with four penalty points.

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court that a witness saw 27-year-old O’Sullivan driving on Peel Road from Douglas on May 2 at 5.15pm.

They said he was using his mobile phone and not wearing a seat belt.

The witness who was also driving said that O’Sullivan was still on his phone when he turned off at Ballagarey Road.

Police checks found that his licence had expired in March 2019.

When interviewed, O’Sullivan said he had bought the car two months prior and it had been off the road while he was repairing it.

He initially denied not wearing a seat belt and being on his phone. He said he was not aware his licence had expired.

Defence advocate David Clegg said that a disqualification would cost O’Sullivan his job.

’He has now renewed his licence,’ said the advocate.

’He held a clean driving licence for 10 years. It is effectively a series of silly decisions that are going to cost him. It wasn’t a particularly long journey from the petrol station to his home.

’Mr O’Sullivan would describe himself as a hard-working man, previously of good character. He has held his hands up.’

Magistrates fined O’Sullivan £100 for failing to wear a seat belt, £250 for using the mobile phone, £120 for the licence offence, and £100 for having no vehicle licence. He must also pay £50 prosecution costs and will pay all the amounts at a rate of £60 per week.
