A 26-year-old man has admitted driving while disqualified just 48 hours after being released from prison.

Craig Jack Anderson was released on December 3 but on December 5 police saw him driving in Peel despite still being under a ban.

He pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and having no insurance and will be sentenced on January 21 after a probation report has been prepared.

Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court how Anderson was disqualified for three months on September 25 as part of his sentence so his ban was due to end on Christmas Day.

That sentence also involved custody imposed at the Court of General Gaol Delivery and Anderson was released on December 3.

On December 5 a police patrol on Douglas Road in Peel saw him driving a Peugeot 206.

He was said to be swerving so he was followed onto Queens Drive and then stopped on North View.

Police recognised him and he was subsequently arrested.

When interviewed, Anderson, who lives in Gladstone Avenue, Ramsey, told police he had bought the car on December 3 and admitted he knew he was still banned.

However, in a first court appearance on December 7 he claimed he had got confused and had thought the ban ended at the same time as the prison sentence.

Mr Swain opposed bail saying that this was a ’blatant and almost immediate disregard for a court order’.

’He has gone out and bought a car and driving it knowing he was disqualified,’ said the prosecutor.

Defence advocate James Peterson asked for a probation report to be completed before sentencing and said that his client would agree to any bail conditions, including a curfew.

Magistrates granted bail in the sum of £500, with a curfew between 8pm and 7am, and conditions not to drive, to live at his home address, to contact probation, and not to leave the island without court consent.
