A doctor at Noble’s Hospital has admitted having cannabis sent to him in the post.

A package addressed to Dr Haroon Rizwan Hamid, of Cronk Aash, Douglas, was intercepted at the Post Office sorting office on September 27.

The 27-year-old pleaded guilty to production of cannabis to the island and attempted possession of the drug and will be sentenced on May 23.

Prosecutor Roger Kane told magistrates that police were called to the sorting office where a suspicious package addressed to Hamid was intercepted.

When it was opened police found tea bags wrapped around the cannabis which was said to weigh 14.95 grams, with a street value of £85.34.

Hamid’s home was searched and a business card with the name Green Rush was found.

When interviewed by police, Hamid denied the offence but gave police the PIN number to his phone.

Analysis of phone messages incriminated him in the production of drugs to the island.

Hamid gave ’no comment’ responses to questions during another interview when quizzed about the messages.

The court heard that he has no previous convictions.

Defence advocate Peter Russell said that the prosecution facts were accepted and asked for a probation report to be prepared before sentencing as he said his client wished to obtain references before he was sentenced.

Bail was granted in the sum of £250 with conditions that Hamid reside at his home address and contact probation.
