A doctor at Noble’s Hospital has been fined £1,000 for having cannabis sent to him in the post.
Dr Haroon Rizwan Hamid, of Cronk Aash, Douglas, admitted production of £85 worth of the drug to the island in a package intercepted at the Post Office sorting office.
The 27-year-old also pleaded guilty to attempted possession of cannabis for which magistrates made no separate penalty.
We previously reported that police were called to the sorting office after a suspicious package addressed to Hamid was intercepted on September 27.
Police opened it and found tea bags wrapped around the cannabis, which was said to weigh 14.95 grams and be worth £85.34.
A search of Hamid’s home address found a business card with the name ’Green Rush’.
He was interviewed by the police and denied the offence but gave police the pin number to his phone.
Analysis of phone messages incriminated him in the production of drugs to the island.
During a second interview, when questioned about the messages, the doctor gave ’no comment’ responses.
The court heard that he has no previous convictions and references which were described as ’excellent’ by magistrates were handed in.
Chair of the magistrates Ken Faragher told defence advocate Peter Russell that they were minded to go along with the recommendation of a probation report, which suggested a financial penalty.
Mr Russell asked that his client be given two months to pay any fine and costs.
Mr Faragher told Hamid while passing sentence: ’We hope this doesn’t impact on your future professional career.’
Hamid must also pay £125 prosecution costs.
